Partnering to develop a coordinated engineering education program across schools, museum field trips

Authors: Danielle Harlow, Ron Skinner, Tarah Connolly, Alexandria Muller

Abstract

Engineering Explorations are curriculum modules that engage children in learning about science and engineering in both their classroom and during a field trip to an interactive science museum. During the field trip, students engage in an engineering challenge and use the materials at the museum to iteratively design a solution and collect data to assess how well it meets the criteria. Prior to the field trip, the students conduct activities in their school classroom that prepares them for the field trip challenge. Following the field trip, they complete a final activityin their classroom in which theyreflect on the field trip experienceand refine the ideas developed through the field trip program. This project is being developed and implemented by leveraging the expertise and resources of institutions across multiple education sectors (K-12 Schools, Museums, Higher Education, and Afterschool programs). The different affordances across contextsallows for rich learning experiences that usethe resources and expertise of institutions across the STEM education ecosystem.
